01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Set within a residential pocket of Ryusen, Taito Ward, the understated shopfront of Ryugetsu draws visitors first and foremost for its dorayaki pancakes. The honeyed sponge feels remarkably light the moment it is picked up, with a moist, delicate crumb that melts away easily. Tucked inside, the tsubuan coarse red bean paste preserves the pleasant texture of the beans, brightened by a faint trace of salt that draws out natural sweetness and rich depth. Some diners have also enjoyed a variation pairing coarse adzuki bean paste with fresh dairy cream for a milder, rounded profile.

Another quiet favorite alongside the dorayaki is kimi shigure. Steamed egg yolk paste encases smooth koshian fine bean paste, delicate enough to crumble at a gentle touch and dissolving instantly on the tongue. Other offerings include mame daifuku accented by lightly salted beans, mitarashi dango glazed and handed over warm right after grilling to order, and glossy dainagon kanoko sweets, each made in an unpretentious, timeless style.

Stepping past the wooden sliding door brings you into a calm, unhurried space where the owner emerges from behind the counter in classic over-the-counter fashion. Selections can run low by late afternoon, so stopping by earlier in the day is best if you hope to choose from the full range of confections.
